God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.

These are the words we dimly hear:

You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Embody me.

Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.

Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.

Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.

Give me your hand.

More about the SAND and the conference:

Science and Nonduality is a community inspired by timeless wisdom, informed by cutting-edge science, and grounded in direct experience. We come together in an openhearted exploration while  celebrating our humanity.

For most of human history we’ve been trying to comprehend who we are through the lens of spiritual traditions. Then the Age of Enlightenment ushered in science, giving us a powerful new way to look at ourselves. New disciplines such as cognitive neuroscience, evolutionary psychology, quantum physics and genetics are delivering fascinating findings, redefining our view of reality and human nature. At the same time there is a new conversation emerging in spirituality. We are challenging the traditional view of spirituality as esoteric, transcendent and removed from daily life.

This year at SAND we will be bringing together some of the brightest minds in science along with spiritual teachers from various traditions, to expand and deepen our understanding and experience of what it means to be human.

The Liminal Space, where transformation takes place

The word liminal comes from the Latin word limen, meaning threshold – any point or place of entering or beginning. A liminal space is the time between the 'what was' and the 'next.' It is a place of transition, waiting, and not knowing. Liminal space is where all transformation takes place, if we learn to wait and let it form us. - inaliminalspace.org

Social Interaction is the key to vitality and longevity

"The Italian island of Sardinia has more than six times as many centenarians as the mainland and ten times as many as North America. Why? According to psychologist Susan Pinker, it's not a sunny disposition or a low-fat, gluten-free diet that keeps the islanders healthy -- it's their emphasis on close personal relationships and face-to-face interactions. Learn more about super longevity as Pinker explains what it takes to live to 100 and beyond."

Our beliefs change how we age

From scienceandnonduality: Mario Martinez proposes that longevity is learned, and we have the capacity to change how our genes express disease. He reports on his studies of healthy centenarians worldwide which found that how they live, and the cultural beliefs they share, are the chief determinants, with only 20% attributed to genetics. All centenarians have rituals. The meaning of what we do is the most important thing. Culture is what influences the mind.

We Create Light

I've been reading "You are the Universe" by Deepak Chopra and Menas Kafatos and an idea they speak of that has fascinated me is that photons, in and of themselves, don’t create light. They are invisible on their own.

After leaving the sun and cruising through space at 671 million miles per hour, an invisible photon gets absorbed into the retina and transformed into an electrochemical impulse within the visual cortex.

And then light is created within the mind.

So wherever we look at something, we create light and if a conscious mind is not present, light does not exist.

If this is true...what about what we see in our dreams? Are we in fact creating light but without the photons?
